Introduction

Designing a better light system isn’t just about adding MORE light, but rather, putting clean, even light where you need it. Other light companies just talk about raw output, but beam pattern is critical to high-quality light output—and the beam pattern is a direct result of the reflector. At Light & Motion, reflectors are one of their core competencies. Their reflectors were an integral part of the first Light & Motion product—underwater lighting—and they are proud to say that they’re still an integral part of the product line almost 20 years later. They spend more time designing and optimizing their reflectors than on any other component in the assembly.

Most companies use generic off-the-shelf reflectors that are developed for general purpose lighting – flashlights, kitchen task lighting, etc. Without a clear end design goal, they become the jack of all trades, yet the master of none. Light & Motion reflectors are designed for the most demanding night cycling applications, including high speeds and foul conditions. All of our reflectors produce a focused center spot which provides a long line of sight and can pierce further down the trail, no matter the conditions. Their Seca line is delivered with a proprietary reflector that is holistically integrated into the light to fulfill a single purpose; To deliver the best possible beam pattern for cyclists.

Shining a light on a wall can give a false representation of what the light will look like on the trail. While easy and convenient, there is a drastic difference between pointing your light toward a flat object like a wall and laying that same light down over the ground in front of you. With many "off-the-shelf" optics, what looked like a smooth, even beam pattern on the wall quickly is found to have too much light in the foreground causing high speed vision to be compromised. Some companies combat this by simply throwing more lumens at the problem, but sending more lumens through the same non-optimized reflector and optic doesn't fix the primary issue. While riding during the day, is the ground uniformly bright, or is it brighter closer to your front tire? They strive to achieve a uniform level of lighting on the trail in front of you. An optic designed for a flashlight or kitchen simply doesn’t do this.
