Split Pivot technology

(US Patent 7,717,212, Worldwide pending)

Along with the Axis Technologies, Dave Weagle’s Split Pivot is the heart of our three new full suspension bike designs. The goal behind the complex engineering in the Split Pivot is to make the suspension transparent to the rider so that they can enjoy the ride and have fun. Dave’s approach to suspension is one that seeks to maximize bump compliance, traction, and efficiency; factors that are typically at odds with each other. The patented Split Pivot technology backed up with DW’s engineering approach give the bikes their incredibly active small bump compliance, and at the same time allows them to achieve pedal efficiency that will surprise even the most experienced riders. The system is called Split Pivot because of the concentric rear dropout pivot placed in line with the rear wheel axle, but there’s more to it than just that.

The concentric rear dropout pivot, along with careful swing arm and linkage pivot location allow for a level of performance that is so good you’ll hardly notice the suspension at all. When you pedal, the bike rockets forward, when you corner, the bike nails your lines, when you brake, the bike maintains traction. Forget about shock lockouts, this finely tuned blend of traction and efficiency makes bikes for any discipline perform better so that you can enjoy the trails.

How does Split Pivot work?
Split Pivot’s concentric dropout pivot design separates acceleration forces from braking forces in the suspension. The system is engineered through careful pivot placement to reduce excess suspension reaction to acceleration forces, and at the same time reduce excess reaction to braking forces. Braking neutrality can be tuned independently of acceleration characteristics, and suspension feel can be tuned by varying leverage ratio curves in a wide range of options to suit different goals in suspension feel and riding discipline.

Split Pivot engineering
2011 is the most aggressive new MTB model lineup that Devinci has ever produced, and we wanted to make these new Split Pivot models our best bikes ever. We knew that achieving this goal would require us to challenge ourselves, and an injection of new ideas and processes. When we sat down to develop the new models, engineers from Devinci met with Split Pivot designer Dave Weagle and we discussed our goals for the performance of each new model. These goals are not always the same. For example, the needs of a high performance XC bike are different than those of a World Cup downhill chassis. Once the team had an idea of the performance goals that they want to meet, DW developed suspension kinematics that tuned pedaling and acceleration characteristics along with leverage ratios to work in unison with third party air springs and dampers.
Wilson: Our World Cup downhill chassis was designed to help the world’s fastest riders go faster. It uses a unique pull-link Split Pivot design that helps to keep the bike’s shock and chassis low and centered. Leverage ratio is optimized for coil springs, and it features a motocross inspired shape that is progressive throughout the entirety of the travel. Its long 89 mm stroke shock and end travel leverage ratio ramp combine with its 216 mm of travel for a bottomless feel. Downhill racing is a game of seconds, and the Wilson’s main pivot location gives a perfect balance of square edged bump compliance, cornering feel, and pedaling performance. The integration of the Split Pivot to our frames has also been engineered to offer a very low shock leverage ratio. This provides a suspension that is more sensitive to the terrain and is more responsive to tuning. It also means that the shock, pivot shafts and bearings take less of a beating because the internal loads in the suspension system are lower. In short, this is a more tuneable, durable and reliable suspension system.

Split Pivot Testing and Tuning
Designing a bike on paper and manufacturing it is only the first step in our process. In addition to superior design engineering features, the rear shocks on all of our Split Pivot models have been custom tuned by Dave Weagle, in direct collaboration with world class suspension manufacturers and skilled test riders. Dave personally rode our bikes on his favourite East Coast XC trails and Downhill spots. He worked with the shock manufacturers to perfectly adjust the internal and external settings of their latest offerings to extract every last drop of traction, efficiency and performance from our 2011 bikes. This custom tuning is the key element to make sure that each unique shock works in perfect harmony with the Split Pivot, thus giving our bikes their superior suspension feeling and a ride that will make you want to be on your bike more often.

Axis Technologies

The Axis technologies are our unique answer to merge Dave Weagle’s innovative Split Pivot technology and suspension engineering with Devinci’s legendary bike frame design and craftsmanship. While the Split Pivot is what gives our rear suspensions their superior performance, the Axis technologies are all the little tweaks and details we put into our frame design to make our bikes even better. Every part of the frame has been carefully considered to push the Split Pivot technology to its peak performance level, resulting in the ultimate ride. These bikes are ready for your reality.

The Axis technologies are:

Perfect balance
The mass distribution of the suspension parts and frame tubing has been carefully studied to provide a perfect balance around the combined centre of Optimum Gof the rider and his bike. Working hand-in-hand with the FRG technology, this absolute balance brings incomparable handling around the bike’s main rotation axes. It is then easier to move the bike around while going airborne or riding in the tight stuff. In short, a less effort consuming ride and a more predictable bike that makes you go faster.

Minimal unsprung mass
Another key highlight acting with the Split Pivot technology to give our bikes their unique sensitive suspension feeling is the minimal unsprung mass of the suspension’s components. When the rear wheel impacts square-edged bumps at high velocity, the suspension’s response time is lightning fast because there is very little unsprung mass being put into motion. This means that the suspension reacts faster because there is no ‘’dead-weight’’ needing to be carried around when the rear wheel moves up or down. Our small Axis Intelligent links, clever damper positioning, lightweight alloy pivot shafts and very low rolling resistance ball bearings have all been engineered with that concern in mind. Your ride will be smoother and more stable on rough trails, allowing you to go faster with less effort. Less unsprung mass = more traction at all times.

Rock-solid pedaling performance
Since it is as important to have efficient pedaling as it is to have a plush suspension, we also engineered the Axis technologies with lateral stiffness in mind. The extra-wide main suspension pivots and thru-axle rear wheel pivots, added to our own Optimum G4 tubing provide unparalleled lateral stiffness. This means that those hard earned pedal strokes won’t get wasted in frame flexing and all the energy will be directly transferred to propelling you forward. Coupled with the revolutionary patented Split Pivot technology, this characteristic of the Axis technologies makes for unrivalled sprinting and climbing performance that will make you a better rider and leave you amazed.

High precision CNC machining after welding
Another top notch Axis technology is our state-of-the-art, high precision Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machining of all the frame’s pivot points and bearing housings after welding and heat treatment. Unlike most manufacturers who machine the pivot housing parts before welding them to the frame and hope for the best regarding deformation after the whole manufacturing process, we have developed a method that allows us to do the final machining on the completely welded and heat treated frame. This makes for ultra-precise pivot point location for optimal suspension performance and perfect alignment of the rear and front triangle. This also reduces the unwanted axial loads caused by poorly aligned pivots that can significantly reduce the suspension bearings and damper lifespan.

Minimum pit-stop time
Because we know you would rather spend your time riding than wrenching your bicycle’s suspension, the Axis technologies have also been designed to minimize the ‘’pit-stop’’ time. This is achieved in three different ways:
the rear shock absorber adjustment knobs have been strategically placed for easy, on the fly access, for those last minute settings just before hitting the trails; we use high tolerance, MAX type ball bearings, fully filled with waterproof grease and sealed on both sides. This type of bearing contains twice the number of steel balls in conventional bearings and can withstand 40% more impact loads, resulting in longer bearing life; we reduced the suspension’s number of parts to a strict minimum, compared to our previous models and to other manufacturers in general. This gives a suspension system that is easier and quicker to maintain, should the need ever arise.

Internal cable routing
As if all of the above benefits were not enough, we also decided to use an internal cable routing through the rear triangle. This minimizes the rear derailleur cable outer casing movement when the suspension is stroked and provides better shifting, virtually eliminating ‘’ghost shifting’’ and reducing wear. It also makes the bikes look better.

Optimum G

At Devinci, we know mountain biking. It’s our passion and we’ve spent years working on making the best mountain bikes in the world through our extensive research and development programs. We know aluminum frames are still the go-to choice for many riders. For that reason, we put our extensive background to use with our aluminum bicycles. Our aluminum technology is raising the bar in the industry with frames that are lightweight, but still strong thanks to hydro-formed tubes

G4 Our full-suspension mountain bike program takes total advantage of our unparalleled research and development experience. Our top-of-the line tube technology is adapted to the Dexter, Dixon and Wilson mountain bikes, which all offer the ultimate in acceleration, power transfer, control and stability.

Thanks to super light tubing made of a special blend of 6066-T6 aluminum combined with state-of-the-art triple butting, high pressure hydroforming and a tapered CNC-machined headtube, this special alloy means the frames made from the Optimum G4 tubeset offer superior durability, incredible stiffness and a strength-to-weight ratio that is above the industry standards.

Every Optimum G4 tubeset is hand-welded in Canada. Our factory’s high welding and heat treatment quality standards, along with the knowledge we learned from our partnerships with the world-class aluminum industry research centres and quality aluminum producers based in our area, results in incredibly durable bikes. We’ve been doing this for more than 20 years, so we have such confidence in the quality of our frames to offer a lifetime warranty.

Full Response Geometry

We have some of the best research and development minds in the bike industry working for us here at Devinci. Our years of experience using competition mountain bikes and experimental bikes outfitted with the latest in data-collecting instruments has lead us to FRG for cross-country Desperado frames and FRG Adjustable for all of our full-suspension mountain bikes.
FRG Adjustable
This design allows riders to choose between a low or high position. With FRG adjustable technology, you can fine-tune your ride to personal tastes or specific trail types using a flip-flop pivot mechanism that slightly changes the bike’s geometry. Our FRG bikes have quick and aggressive behavior at lower speeds, but are surprisingly stable at higher speeds. Add this to our Super Low Standover Height and you get a nimble Full Response Geometry bike with precise handling and excellent power transfer that reacts immediately to rider input whether pedaling uphill or railing downhill singletrack.

Devinci Carbon Monocoque

Here at Devinci, we engineer carbon. We’ve spent years refining our skills and using our extensive research and development background to make some of the best carbon frames in the world. From our road bikes to our mountain bikes and even our performance hybrids, we have carbon frames that are light and strong.
DMC G
Our mountain bike-specific Devinci Carbon Monocoque G technology uses multidirectional layers of carbon fibre that are superimposed in a specific pattern. We also use Nano Powder, which is way of reinforcing the resin with microscopic carbon tubes.

Using a DMC Gravity carbon recipe that is completely exclusive to Devinci, our monocoque carbon mountain bike frames are lightweight and strong, yet also compliant. Found in the Desperado Carbon lineup of cross country bikes, the DMC Gravity technology means each size of bike has its own unique mold for the optimal size/weight balance. The frames have oversized chain stays and down tubes for added stiffness. This results in an extremely well-balanced mountain bike with fantastic acceleration and power transfer, as well as steering and control that is second to none.
